MODELLING DIRECTIONAL SOLIDIFICATION Progress Report on Grant NAGf-1 May to 31 October CLARKSON UNIVERSITY Potsdam, New York Investigators: Dr. William R. Wilcox, Dean School of Engineering () ; fax Dr. Liya L. Regel, Director International Center for Gravity Materials Science and Applications () A physical model has been developed which predicts the essential features of the solidification pattern under earth’s gravity field of 1-g for cylindrical geometries and allows extrapolation of the results to outer space conditions of 0-g.

The present study explores numerically and experimentally the process of a phase-change material (PCM) solidification in a spherical shell. At the initial state, the PCM liquid occupies % of the shell. The upper segment of % contains air, which flows in as the solidification progresses. The moment a crystal begins to grow is know as nucleation and the point where it occurs is the nucleation point. At the solidification temperature, atoms of a liquid, such as melted metal, begin to bond together at the nucleation points and start to form crystals. The final sizes of the individual crystals depend on the number of nucleation points.

Solidification is one of the oldest processes known for producing complex shapes for applications ranging from art to industry, and today it still remains one of the most important commercial technologies for many materials. Since the s, numerous fundamental developments in the understanding of solidification processes and microstructure formation have been derived from both 5/5(2).   In the present work, ultrasonic vibration was applied into the solidification process of squeeze casting to fabricate in situ TiB 2 /Al composites. The microstructures and mechanical properties of the composites fabricated by ultrasonic gravity casting and ultrasonic assisted squeeze casting were studied.

The results of many foreign and Hungarian researchers presented at the 6th International Conference on Solidification and Gravity, in Miskolc-Lillafüred, on Septemberhave been collected in this volume.

This conference series is aimed to attract all those having interest in the investigation and simulation of different types of solidification processes and both micro- and macro.

The present publication provides the most up-to-date information for researchers and engineers who are interested in solidification processes. Theoretical analyses, as well as studies of the technological problems which are associated with solidification in various gravitational environments, are presented.

The topics covered range from fundamental aspects and modelling to practical. 44/44 Solidification of Metals and Alloys, YearVolume 2, Book No. 44 Krzepnięcie Metali i Stopów, RokRocznik 2, Nr 44 PAN – Katowice PL ISSN COMPUTER SIMULATION OF THE FILLING AND SOLIDIFICATION OF A GRAVITY DIE CASTING L.

SOWA1, N. SCZYGIOL2. Modification of gravity over practical time scales for the purposes of modifying or controlling solidification proves to be a far more daunting and expensive technological challenge.

This article discusses various microgravity solidification experiments that involve pure metals, alloys, and semiconductors and Solidification and gravity 2000 book the official NASA acronyms. D.N.

Riahi, in Transport Phenomena in Porous Media II, INTRODUCTION. Convection effects during alloy solidification are known to be important, see for example Davis ().The convective flow affects the solid–liquid content within a porous layer, which exists adjacent to the solid–liquid interface, and influences the flow pattern and the critical conditions for the generation.

This work illustrates how ground testing supports the development of reduced gravity solidification experiments. Ground-based and reduced-gravity containerless processing used to study alloy solidification and experimental techniques include atomization facilities, drop-tube experiments, and levitation processing on parabolic flights, sounding.

For better solidification of pure metals, cooling curves of the type in figurei.e. with supercooling, are adopted. The liquid cools as the specific heat decreases (between points A and B).

Undercooling is thus necessary (between points B and C). C.F. Jasso-Gastinel, in Modification of Polymer Properties, Preparation of PGCs. Among the basic methods, gravity casting in a step-by-step method does not require pressure (Chunhua and Bianying, ).In some cases, spatial distribution of the component materials can be obtained by partial solidification or cross-linking of a poured melt as a first step, before a second melt is.

The following areas have been identified and selected for the analysis of gravity die casting process from Al-Si-Mg alloys: The solidification time of these alloys in the die casting process mould. American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Sunrise Valley Drive, Suite Reston, VA Solidification in microgravity aboard the space shuttle Endeavour resulted in a dramatic change in the morphology of the primary Al2Cu phase compared to ground-based solidification in unit gravity.

Prof. Stefanescu’s research interests include experimental and numerical aspects of solidification processing, influence of low-gravity on solidification, processing of metal-matrix composites, processing of ceramic superconductors, manufacturing technologies and physical metallurgy of cast iron, steel and nonferrous alloys, and cast metals.

On Earth, gravity creates natural convection in the melt. Therefore, where there are density differences between the solid and the liquid, the newly formed crystals may float away from the solidification front and re-melt.

ISS levitation experiments allow for a much wider range of manipulation of the samples due to the absence of gravity.

There is far less study of the refining effect of super gravity fields on solidification structures of metals than of the effects of electrical currents, magnetic and ultrasonic fields.

Moreover, the refining mechanisms of super gravity are far from clear. This study applied a super gravity field to Al-Cu alloys to investigate its effect on refining their structures and the mechanism of.
